A Word from the Chairman

Californians have always been considered dreamers and pioneers. Far away from the corridors of power and established hierarchy elsewhere in the country, from the time of the gold rush, individuals have moved to the Golden State in search of fame, fortune, a stimulating lifestyle and sunshine. A few of the luckiest individuals have been fortunate enough to be associated with Stanford University. Among these are the leaders of Stanford Radiology, who founded the department in 1904.

Over a century later, we celebrate one-hundred years of making Radiology history. Looking back over the past years, we feel immense pride in the stunning achievements of our Department. These legacies include harnessing the power of the linear accelerator to treat cancer, developing a cure for Hodgkin’s disease, and advancing non-invasive imaging using x-ray and magnetic resonance methods to better understand the structure and function of living systems.

Our second century began on a high note with the opening of the expansion of the Lucas Center for Imaging. Together with the original Lucas Center, completed in 1992, both buildings constitute one of the world’s largest centers for imaging located on a university campus. The expansion positions us as a world leader and augments the wide-range of research opportunities available in our Department. Major areas of our cutting-edge research programs include the physics and engineering of medical imaging; molecular imaging; and biocomputation with 3D-image visualization and quantitation. Through our ongoing efforts to transform laboratory discoveries into innovative therapies that improve health, we are committed to providing the highest level of patient care available.

In addition to excellence in research and patient care, our Department is known for providing an outstanding education for its students, residents, and fellows. Our faculty have achieved national and international recognition for their publications, visiting professorships, and multitude of awards and grants. They are committed to sharing their knowledge and mentoring the future leaders in Radiology. Our residency program attracts the brightest students from around the world and our innovative curriculum for medical students includes electives in nuclear medicine as well as diagnostic and pediatric Radiology. We offer medical imaging programs at the graduate level, NIH-funded post-doctoral fellowships in Advanced Techniques for Cancer Imaging, and Visiting Fellowships in all subspecialties. An education from Stanford Radiology includes access to a wide range of conferences and to opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with specialists from a variety of disciplines.

Our world-renowned reputation is reflected in our continuing education courses whose enrollment has grown exponentially each year. We are delighted that our current work is well recognized and we hope you enjoy experiencing the world of Stanford Radiology through our website.
